In Essence

Essential Oils. The term alone intimates vitality. The decanted soul of a plant – its fragrance, its essence. And while the most notable quality is the aroma, Essential Oils have uses far beyond simply generating a pleasant olfactory experience.

Essential Oils are a powerful substance, despite having somewhat of an ethereal reputation. Consider this: it takes 60,000 roses to make approximately 1 ounce of rose essential oil. Not all oils are subject to such drastic ratios, but nevertheless, they are highly concentrated substances that abound in functions.

Based on structure, oils are particularly easy for the skin to absorb. They can also be used as vapours, taken orally (some, not all), or added to enrich other products. Properly distilled oils contain many of the  beneficial properties of the plant it was derived from. Here are a few safe, effective, and beautifully smelling examples of ways that essential oils can be used:

Medical – Oral drops of clove oil can help treat a tooth infection. A ‘Thieves’ blend helps ward off colds and flus. A rub of Japanese mint oil can help relieve muscle tension. (Note: Most oils should be diluted in a carrier oil before being applied topically)

Aesthetic – Tea tree oil’s cleansing and antibacterial properties are great for a plethora of skin conditions and Rosemary is reviving for the scalp.

Hygiene – Neutralize odors, sanitize yoga mats and sports equipment with Tea Tree, peppermint and/or lemon oils. Reduce airborne pathogens by spraying a Thieves blend.

Pest Repellent – Discourage mosquitos with lemongrass and citronella. Spray areas where spiders and rodents may be entering your home with peppermint oil. Use orange, clove, and tea tree oil on furniture that may be housing mites.

Comfort and R&R – Lavender vapour can enhance sleep and improve anxiety. Add whatever oil suits your groove to an oil burner and enjoy the subtle impact of an aromatically inspired environment. My personal favourite fragrances are Rose, Lavender, Sandalwood, and a blend of Vanilla and Lemon.
